Blinds are perhaps the most widely used window coverings today. They come in a great variety ranging from different colours and designs as well as fabrics and materials like track blinds, rollers and
wood Venetian blinds.
The name has evidently been derived from their function, which is to literally “blind” the vision of outsiders peeking through windows. Traditionally, they come in two varieties: slat and solid. Solid blinds are aligned along vertical axis in the shape of rollers, while slat blinds are aligned along horizontal and vertical axis. Regardless of form, the function of both is to block light in the room while providing the occupants with desired privacy.
Blinds have been commonly used throughout history in a number of civilisations. In fact, the first known use of blinds was by nomad tribes of deserts, who would cover up their windows using thick fabric sheets. This would keep the ferocious desert sun away and would provide a cooling effect. Blinds were also used by the Egyptian civilisation, however, they shrewdly replaced fabric sheets with breathable reeds for blocking the sun while allowing the air to pass.
